Van Baalen was born in Sterling, Colorado, moved to London Springs,
Oregon as a small child.
After graduating from High School in Cottage Grove, the
artist attended The University of Texas in Austin and graduated with
a BS in Pharmacy.
Van
Baalen was a self taught painter in oil until 1989. After retiring from Pharmacy
practice, the artist began art studies with local Texas artist,
Gertie Faye Johnson and Houston artist Dick Turner. Studies continued "en plein
air" with Turner in Austria, Southern France, Paris and Northern
Italy. Later Van Baalen
studied with Morgan Samuel Price in the USA and in Sicily. Van Baalen paintings are in
collections in Bangladesh, Canada, Japan, Mexico and the
USA.
